BECOMING A SUBSTITUTE TEACHER
To be considered for a substitute teaching position, you must:

  1. Participate in a mandatory "Substitute Teacher Orientation”

  2. Provide a copy of your high school diploma or GED equivalent, college transcript or teaching certificate (if Texas-certified)

  3. Pass a background check

  4. Complete required paperwork

During the Substitute Orientation, participants will be provided strategies to develop skills in the following areas:

  • Effective classroom management and teaching strategies

  • Safety

  • Professionalism and ethics in education

Fingerprinting Process
​Texas school districts are mandated by law to require fingerprint background checks for new employees. After you have participated in the Substitute Orientation and your background is complete, you will be able to schedule an appointment for your fingerprinting at the agency closest to you.

There is a required fingerprinting processing fee that is the responsibility of the substitute teaching candidate to pay. The fee is between $43 and $48. You must provide a check or money order at the time of fingerprinting at the scheduled agency or pay online when scheduling appointment.

Employment is contingent on receiving a clean FBI fingerprint report.

 

Rate of Pay and Benefits
​Certified. $80.00 Full day, $40.00 Half day, $140.00 Long Term Full day, $70.00 Long Term Half day

Degreed. $70.00 Full day, $35.00 Half day, $115.00 Long Term Full day, $57.50 Long Term Half day

Non-Degreed. $60.00 Full day, $30.00 Half day, $90.00 Long Term Full day, $45.00 Long Term Half day

Aides. $60.00 Full day, $30.00 Half day (rate remains the same for Long Term)

**Long Term consists of being in the same assignment for 5 consecutive days for the same teacher, on the 6th day of the same assignment the pay will increase appropriately.
