"When someone asks me where I'm from, I say Marshall, Texas. My daughter or whoever is around will say, 'No you're not, you're from California.' Then I will say, 'Well, my heart is in Marshall, Texas."
Y.A. Tittle, MHS Class of 1944
1944
The Y. A. Tittle Fieldhouse opened originally as part of the Maverick Stadium complex in 1980, but the day-to-day home for Maverick Football has drastically changed over the last 40 years.
The fieldhouse, which was renamed in 2014 to honor of the Mavs' most famous football alum, began as the home of the Marshall High School football program in 1980. The facility underwent a series of additions and renovations over the years, with the most dynamic facelifts occurring over the last 20 years.
In the early 2000s, then-Marshall coach Rodney Southern spearheaded an effort to build a new weight room and coaches offices to the existing building. The result was a new, larger weight room and welcoming foyer with new offices that doubled the size of the fieldhouse.
In 2019, the weight room was upgraded and the fieldhouse itself underwent a transformation that has truly remodeled it into a modern sports facility. In addition to the new upgrades to the weight room, the Mavs under the direction of coach Jake Griedl have updated the varsity locker room; converted the previous film room into a varsity players lounge complete with furniture, television, game consoles and even a barber's chair for game day cuts. A new Maverick Honors Wall has been installed as well as a game day hospitality room. The entire facility has been spruced up tjhroughout with graphics provided by Waterboy Graphics.
The weight room project itself was done through a partnership between MISD and BSN Sports.
The fieldhouse was renamed in honor of Y.A. Tittle in 2014. Tittle, the Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback who was a member of the MHS Class of 1944, was in attendance during a ceremony that was attended by local, state and national dignitaries. Until his death in 2017 at the age of 90, Y.A. had always made it a point to attend a Maverick football game as long as he was physically able and remained a die-hard Maverick follower and fan until he passed away in October of 2017.
The Y.A. Tittle Fieldhouse also serves as the home to Maverick Soccer on game days, and also houses the Maverick Football ticket office.
