This is the image for the news article titled MISD Approves 2020-2021 Academic CalendarMarshall ISD's Board of Trustees approved the 2020-2021 District Academic Calendar during their regular March meeting held in the Pat Smith Gasperson Board Room Monday evening.

The calendar includes several key changes due to MISD's new distinction as an official District of Innovation. The biggest change is the date for the start of school, which will be on Thursday, August 13. State law requires that school districts start school on the final Monday of August unless the district is recognized as a District of Innovation by the Texas Education Agency.

That distinction allows MISD to be more flexible with its calendar. Due to the early start, New Teacher Orientation will take place Aug. 3-5, with all returning teachers and staff set to return from summer break Aug. 6-12.

Official holidays still include Labor Day (Sept. 2), Thanksgiving (Nov. 23-27), Christmas/New Year's (Dec. 21-Jan. 4 for students, through Jan. 1 for staff), MLK Day (Jan. 19), Presidents Day (Feb. 15), and Good Friday/Easter (April 2, April 5).

With the new calendar, the last day of school will be on Thursday, May 27.

Other highlights to the calendar include an extended Fall Break, which will be October 15, 16 and 19. Spring Break will be March 8-12.

The calendar will be posted on the MISD website in the coming days.
