COSMETOLOGYMHS Cosmetology was established in 2010 to provide an immediate world of opportunity for students who complete the 1,000-hour coursework and want to immediately enter the workforce upon graduation.

To receive a certification in Cosmetology, students must complete 1,000 hours of coursework at MHS. This includes daily theory classes and practical skills performance on mannequins, as well as some on their classmates. The program is a three-year base program of Cosmetology, with courses including Introduction to Cosmetology, Cosmetology I and Cosmetology II.

MHS Cosmetology students who complete their 1,000 hours become immediately eligible to apply for and take the state licensing exam upon graduation. At that point, if they pass the exam, MHS Cosmetology students can then immediately walk right into a career of such as stylist, manicurist, make-up artist, or any other number of specialties in the profession.

The students also get valuable experience through the “Mav Salon,” a student-based salon at MHS which is open Wednesday through Friday each week during the school year, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The salon is open to the public by appointment, with prices ranging from $5-$25 depending on the service.

Students are taught basic skills such as roller sets, finger waves, manicures, pedicures, facials, make-up application, and all of the recommended Safety and Sanitation measures as required by the Texas Department of Regulation and Licensing.

This comprehensive course is designed to address a broad range of knowledge and skills and investigation of careers related to personal development and management, promotion of strong families, preparation for adult roles and personal care services. Content includes a focus on interpersonal skills, decision-making, promotion of family strengths and well-being; developing positive relationships with peers; child development and human personal care services including Cosmetology.

Students explore hair styling, manicuring, shampooing and hair-cutting, skincare and facial makeup. They begin to earn clock hours toward state licensing requirements as they learn about the personal care industry. Bacteriology, sterilization and sanitation are also emphasized. Note -- Students are required to pay the following mandatory fees to join this class: $25.00 for a student permit, and $100.00 for a cosmetology kit.

Students continue to progress toward state licensing requirements as they study in-depth hair care, nail care and skin care. Their goal is to meet the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation requirements for licensure upon passing the state examination.

This advanced course provides specific job training for entry-level employment in the cosmetology industry. Advanced training and techniques in cosmetology are emphasized and students practice hands-on skills to prepare for the State License Exam.
