Closure FAQ

This page will be updated with FAQs as they arise. If you have a question that does not appear on this page, please contact your child's teacher and/or campus administrator.
CLOSURE UPDATES
• How long will MISD be closed?
By executive order of Gov. Greg Abbott on April 17, 2020, MISD and all other public schools in Texas are closed for the remainder of the school year in the statewide effort to stop the spread of COVID-19. The district provides updates during the closure on our designated "Closure Updates" page on our district website.

• How does the closure affect the school calendar, particularly for senior activities?
MISD will continue to make adjustments to the calendar as it becomes necessary. Regarding 2020 Graduation, MISD fully intends to schedule a graduation commencement ceremony for the Class of 2020 when it is deemed safe to do so. Other scheduled senior events that have been affected by this closure are being reviewed on a case-by-case basis, but graduation is something the district is committed to at a date and time to be announced.

REPORT CARDS/GRADING
• How may we receive my student's report card for the fifth six weeks?
The fifth grading period report card may be accessed in Skyward beginning April 9. Please note, in an effort to keep everyone safe due to the COVID-19 virus, the district will make every effort to become paperless. Any assignments that were completed since the closing of the school district will be utilized as opportunities to improve the student's fifth grading period grade from the progress report grade. If your child has not submitted any assignments, they will have until this Friday, April 10, to submit assignments to be considered for a grade change.

Please note the sixth grading cycle will begin with online assignments that will be taken for a grade. Please contact your child's school with any questions, concerns, or assistance that may be needed to access our online learning platforms.

• Will my student automatically be promoted to the next grade due to the COVID-19 closure?
No. For grades 1-8, the promotion to the next grade will be based upon the students’ performance in their core subjects. If a student fails two or more core subjects for the year, they have the potential to be retained in their current grade. A grade placement committee will convene to discuss retention/promotion based upon all data points (grades, reading & math levels, growth performance, attendance, etc).

ONLINE ACCESS
• How may I access my child's assignments/grades?
1. Go to MISD website.
2. Click on "Parents," in drop down menu click on "Skyward Family Access."
3. Click on link to Skyward Family Portal
4. Enter Log in ID and password (see below for info)
5. Under the Skyward logo click on +, select gradebook (Kindergarten Parents: select "portfolio")

Parents should be able to see all grades for all five six-week grading periods. Grades for the fifth six-week grading period will be available starting April 9.

• What is my child's login/password?
Example: Jane Rachel Doe will graduate in 2024. Her birthday is January 11, 2005. Her login would be her graduation year (24) plus last name, first name initial, middle name initial (doejr), so the login would be 24doejr. Password would include "Mav" plus 4-digit birth year (2005) plus 2-digit birth month (01) plus birth day (11). So the password in this case would be Mav20050111.

If you are still having problems with your child's login, please contact your child's teacher.

• What if we don't have home access to the internet?
The district has made our Wi-Fi available for use at the Marshall High School parking lot from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. Also, you can check with local internet providers to see what discount plans and/or free Wi-Fi hotspots they may have available. Most cell phones, iPads, gaming systems, tablets, laptops and other electronic devices are working with our platforms. MISD is doing everything we possibly can to ensure that our students have the opportunity to do their assignments and be successful during this time.

• Is the work mandatory?
Yes. The sixth six weeks began on Monday, April 6. Online assignments are required for this six weeks. If you are having trouble connecting to the online work, please contact your child's teacher via email, Google Classroom, Dojo, or Facebook.

• Why are you not offering paper packets any longer?
Our staff are working under the mandatory shelter-in-place order that has been issued in the counties of Gregg, Harrison, and the state of Louisiana. We are doing our part to ensure the safety of our students, their families, and our Maverick Family.

COMMUNICATIONS
• What if I am not receiving district messages via phone callouts and/or emails?
When it is discovered that a student's contact information is incorrect, please contact your campus level PEIMS (registrar) person and notify them of the wrong number. They have the campus level Skyward rights to update student information in Skyward. The district's messenger system is linked to Skyward and therefore utilizes the information that is submitted at the campus level.

CHILD NUTRITION
• Is the district still providing meals for students?
Yes. MISD is distributing lunches and the next day's breakfast to students at three different locations: Price T. Young Elementary, David Crockett Elementary, and Marshall High School. These lunches are available to all students Monday-Friday from 11 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. via drive-up at those locations.

• Why did the district cease making home deliveries of meals?
Harrison County and the city of Marshall are under shelter-in-place orders due to the increased spread of COVID-19 in our area. The district will not make home deliveries in an effort to decrease potential exposure to both our students, their families and our staff.

STUDENT REGISTRATION
• Is the district actively registering or withdrawing students during closure?
Yes. We have online registration forms that are available here for students who need to register. We also have provided withdrawal forms for those that need to withdraw a student. The forms, including Spanish translation, can also be accessed from the district's main web page at www.marshallisd.com.

• What about Pre-K/Kindergarten Roundup?
Registration roundup for students entering pre-kindergarten or kindergarten has been postponed until the summer. MISD will announce dates and times for the registration of these students as soon as it is safe to do so.

• How can I apply for the AVID Program at MJHS and MHS for next year?
Application forms are available for download at https://marshallisd.com/departments/curriculum___instruction/avid_program. Students entering grades 7, 8, 9 or 10 in 2020-2021 are eligible to apply.

TESTING
• What about Gifted/Talented testing and STEM Program testing?
Testing for the MISD STEM program and Gifted/Talented program for the 2020-2021 school year has been postponed until the summer. All testing for these programs will take place at a time when the district can reopen and is under less strict social distancing guidelines.
