This is the image for the news article titled MJHS Student Council Shines On State LevelThe Marshall Junior High School Student Council recently hosted the Texas Association of Student Councils Middle Level Conference with the assistance of the local National Junior Honor Society chapter.

The conference was held in San Marcos and attend by almost 1,000 people. As Conference Coordinator School, MJHS was responsible for decorations, activities, and conference bags along with many other details. MJHS Student Council worked tirelessly to incorporate the TASC 2018-2019 state theme and project (“Resolve to Rise”) with a focus on mental health into the conference. MJHS’ Resolve to Rise logo was so well liked that a version of it will be used as the logo for the High School Annual Conference in April.

Marshall students not only ran the registration table, they also designed and implemented activities which allowed for mental health care to be the focus. Their activities allowed for positive encouragement and interaction in ways meeting a variety of activity levels.

MJHS Student Council also selected a movie for students not interested in attending the conference dance Friday night. “1001 to 1” deals with the mental health of a heavily-recruited high school basketball player whose whole life changes when he begins having seizures. During the movie and dance, students could create Counselor Comfort Kits to be taken back to their school counselors to use with students in turmoil. MJHS decided to incorporate the mental health-focused state project in order to provide schools with an opportunity to participate in the state project that they might not otherwise have.

“By supporting each other, we can break the negative stigma surrounding mental health,” said Carol Ann Williams, MJHS Student Council president, in her welcome address. “When we Resolve to Rise, we have the power to change the world.”

The Conference Planning Committee was invited to attend the TASC Board of Directors Meeting where they discussed their plans for the event as well as what they learned from the experience. The students highlighted the teamwork, cooperation, and understanding utilized to plan the event.  Mrs. Terry Hamm, TASC Executive Director, encouraged all of the MJHS students to remember this event when working on college and job applications in the future.

The students completed their trip and celebrated a job well done with a trip to the AT&T Center to watch the San Antonio Spurs play the Houston Rockets.

MJHS Student Council is sponsored by Ms. Jasmine Johnson.
