The action means that teachers in MISD will receive pay according to their appropriate years of experience on the salary scale, or “step,” next year after the step scale raises had been frozen since the 2016-2017 school year.

Trustees in attendance voted 5-1 in favor of the recommendation.

Teachers in MISD next year will see an increase in salary according to their step, ranging anywhere from $500 to $2,200 depending on their years of experience.

“This was a budgetary goal this year, to create some sort of salary increase for our employees,” said Dr. Gibson. “It started with unfreezing the step scale for our teachers. We have kicked the can down the road long enough. Had we continued to do it, it could cause serious budget implications in the future.”

Dr. Gibson said the district is continuing to look for ways to possibly provide other employees with some type of increase, but stressed those discussions are ongoing in the budget process for 2019-2020.

With the MISD salary scale being unfrozen, and combined with a proposed $5,000 raise at the state level for teachers across the board in Texas in the current legislative session in Austin, MISD teachers could see a significant increase in pay for next school year depending on what happens at the state capitol the next few weeks.

Teachers who are “off the scale” – or, in year 28 or above – will see an annual $500 increase in salary according to the approved scale.

In other action from Thursday’s special called meeting, Dr. Gibson presented information regarding the district’s study of a possible early graduation high school in MISD that would be a separate charter school within the district.

“This Marshall Early Graduation School would assist us with carrying out our vision of seeing every student in MISD graduating with a high school diploma,” Gibson said. “This campus would provide a flexible, self-paced learning environment for students and will enable students to recover credits in all subject areas through computer-based instructional programs that align with the student’s graduation plan.”

Potential students at the early graduation campus would include:
• Students who have fallen behind their cohort in earning academic credits;
• Students who struggle in a traditional classroom setting and school environment;
• Students who desire to receive a high school diploma instead of dropping out of school for personal reasons, such as students with children, students who need to work, or students who possibly want to graduate early.

Students attending the early graduation campus would not be allowed to participate in extra-curricular activities.

Trustees were not asked to take any action regarding the possibility, as Thursday’s discussion was meant as an informative session regarding the district’s idea for the charter school concept.
