School Health Advisory Council (SHAC)

A SHAC (School Health Advisory Council) is a school board-appointed advisory group of individuals who represent different segments of the community. By law, a majority of the members must be persons who are parents of students enrolled in the district and who are not employed by the district. SHACs assist the districts in ensuring that local community values are reflected in health education instruction. Additionally, SHACs can help districts meet performance goals and alleviate financial constraints. SHACs play an important role in strengthening the connection between health and learning. They can help parents and community stakeholders reinforce the knowledge and skills children need to stay healthy for a lifetime.

This year (2018-2019), we are excited to announce that we are joining forces with ETCADA (East Texas Council for Alcohol and Drug Abuse) and offering combined Coalition/SHAC meetings once a month.

Our first Coalition/SHAC meeting will be held Oct. 16, from 1-2 p.m., at the Marshall Public Library located at 300 S. Alamo Blvd in Marshall. Starting Dec. 18, our meetings will be held at the Marshall ISD Administration Building at 1305 E. Pinecrest Drive, from 1-2 p.m.

Our goals and objectives for 2018-2019 are:

  • Continue the Triple M Backpack program on all elementary campuses

  • Promote ESTEEM abstinence curriculum for 5th-9th grade

  • Partner with ETCADA to raise awareness and educate students, parents, and our community about serious issues of underage drinking, drug use, and distracted driving

  • Explore other options to meet employee and student wellness needs

  • Improve community awareness for SHAC involvement
