Last week’s focus topic was on MISD’s Character Education programs and the district’s approach to building a positive campus climate.

Andy Chilcoat, the district’s Executive Director of Student Services, hosted the meeting which is intended to foster communication and an exchange of information with parents and community members about certain aspects of Marshall ISD.

“These luncheons are designed for those who, if they’ve got an hour lunch, to eat and hear a brief presentation on different aspects of our district operations,” Chilcoat said.

Those in attendance are treated to lunch courtesy of MISD.

Last week’s session focused on Character Education programs currently in the district, which include the Student Success Academy (SSA) in place at Marshall Junior High School and elementary schools; JUMP, which is in its first year of operation at Marshall High School; community service; Safe and Civil Schools program; and PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions).

Chilcoat shared discipline data in the district compared to last year before the Character Education programs were implemented. He noted that Disciplinary Alternative Education Program (DAEP) placements have been reduced by eight percent. District Out-of-School (OSS) suspensions are reduced by 19 percent, and District In-School (ISS) suspensions are down by 35 percent.

The SSA/JUMP program is designed to modify behaviors in the classroom that lead to poor academic performance. It provides a clear and consistent framework for success in a self-contained classroom, Chilcoat said.

Continued participation or early release from the programs are determined by a points system. For a 15-day placement, all students assigned in JUMP will be reviewed after five days served and again after 10 days served. Each day the student will start the day with 100 points, with points being deducted when the JUMP Program criteria is not met.

After five days, the student must have a total of 350-500 points to be allowed to attend two core classes and one elective during days 6-10. After 10 days, the student must have 800-1,000 points to be considered for early removal.

Students who do not receive the necessary amount of points to be considered for early removal will finish their 15-day placement in JUMP, pending no referrals are written by the General Education teachers. The same criteria is in place for a 30-day placement, except that after 15 days a student must earn 1,200-1,500 points to be allowed to continue to attend three core classes and two electives.

Community service initiatives include work with Mission Marshall, Keep Marshall Beautiful, Marshall Fire Department and SSC (Services for Education). DAEP Student Services Coordinator, Robert Knox, has spearheaded the community service opportunities in an effort to get students out into the community with positive roles and responsibilities.

Safe and Civil Schools is a district-wide program to develop better behavior management in schools. The program is designed to implement school-wide, positive behavior support and designs and implements a school improvement plan.

Chilcoat said a firm date for the next Lunch and Learn has not been finalized.
