This is the image for the news article titled Volunteer Math Tutoring Program Grows At MJHSMembers of the Marshall community have established a volunteer Math Tutoring Program this year at Marshall Junior High School.

With the help of longtime MISD Math teacher and administrator Faye Whitlow, and former MISD Principal and current trustee Cathy Marshall, a team of volunteers was established at the beginning of the year to support MJHS students in Math. Three teams of volunteers, captained by members of the Marshall school board who are former educators themselves, have been meeting and providing math tutoring sessions since November at MJHS.

“We are so thankful for all the volunteers who have been involved in these tutoring efforts,” said Angela Bray, MISD Math Coordinator. “It is wonderful to have such community support for our MISD students.”

The volunteer teams began last fall with training sessions that modeled strategies for teaching grades 6-8 math concepts. These sessions, led by Whitlow, included both grade-level math teachers as well as the volunteer tutors.

Tutorials began on Nov. 28, Bray said. Teams traveled to the enrichment classes in each grade at MJHS and worked with students reviewing math concepts that had been taught the first nine weeks of school. Earlier this month on Feb. 6, volunteer teams returned for a second day of tutoring to review the concepts studied the previous eight weeks.

The next tutoring day in the program is scheduled for March 20.

Volunteer teams include:

6th Grade Team: Cathy Marshall (captain); Robbie Anderson, Jim Bates, Nicki Burris, Ernie Marshall and Frances Mitchell. The team also included the late Lenora Reed, who passed away earlier this year.

7th Grade Team: Helen Warwick (captain); Steven Flohr, Jamie Howlett, Sarah Palmer, Phil Simmons, and Jimmy Wall.

8th Grade Team: Ted Huffhines (captain); Ned Dennis, Grady Echols, Gerald Webb and Faye Whitlow.

The three school board members volunteered to serve as captains and actively recruited members of the community to be on their teams.
