MHS Cheer Brings Home NCA Camp Honors

This is the image for the news article titled MHS Cheer Brings Home NCA Camp HonorsMarshall High School Cheer squads attended the 2017 National Cheerleaders Association (NCA) Camp at Sam Houston State University and brought home multiple awards, including a bid to the NCA National Championships as well as three students who earned recognition as All-American.

Claire Rizzo and Kaeleigh Clark were both chosen as All-Americans, while Pedro Tovar also earned All-American recognition as “Mavo the Mascot.”

Rizzo and Clark will have the opportunity to attend the Thanksgiving parade in London in November following their selections as All-Americans.

Four other Mav Cheer Varsity members were selected to try out for the All-America team, including Ashley McMullen, Madi Bice, Ally Sims and Peyton West. Cloe Carter was selected to try out for the Junior Varsity All-America team.

Rizzo, Clark and West also were given applications to join the NCA staff.

As a team, Marshall earned top ratings and Superior ribbons for both Sideline Chant and Camp Cheer.

“The squad was judged on placement of motions, timing/rhythm, voice, execution of skills, sharpness, expression/projection, crowd appeal and overall effect,” said Crystal Pyle, MHS Cheer sponsor. “NCA staff evaluation comments on Mav Cheer Varsity’s performance included good volume, nice formations, way to hit the crowd, good skills. We also received a ‘perfect’ comment from one judge on skilled entrance, difficulty of skills and overall technique in the performance section. I am so proud of all of these students!”

The Varsity Cheer also received an Award for Technical Excellence in Tumbling, and earned the Spirit Stick all four days of the competition.

In the Junior Varsity Division, Marshall earned a top rating-Superior for Chant and Camp Cheer while also receiving the Spirit Stick all four days. The squad won an Award for Technical Excellence in Crowd Leading as well as the first-place trophy for Champion Chant. The Marshall JV Cheer also received a national championship bid as well.

Tovar, as “Mavo,” received a Leadership Award and Superior ribbon in his evaluations as well, to go along with recognition as All-American mascot.
